This is a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and a little correspondence that was kept by George N. Talcott, Sr. with regard to the Puget Sound-Grays Harbor Ship Canal, also known as Olympia-Grays Harbor Canal. The newspaper clippings are pasted on the pages of a catalog from Jos. Mayer & Bros., a manufacturer of sterling silver souvenirs and tableware. There is a signed hand-written affidavit called My Promise from George N. Talcott. Sr. describing his promise to Payn to keep the records about the canal. The affadavit is attached to the last page of the scrapbook. The bookplate on the inside of the scrapbook belongs to the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington Loan Library. On the bookplate is typed: "Gift: Scrapbook on the proposed canal from Puget Sound to Grays Harbor. Honoring: Pioneer promoter of the Proposed Canal, Mr. Elias Payn. Donor: Mr. G. N. Talcott, Friend & Counselor."
